GRC’s Community Efforts with Newhouse
The people who make up Great Range Capital’s Investment team have lives and interests outside of work, and we wouldn’t have it any other way. We know how important it is to regularly direct our time and resources beyond our office walls, and we recently did just that by partnering with GRC Vice President Larry Flanagan and the nonprofit he serves year-round –– Newhouse.
Founded in 1971, Newhouse was Kansas City’s first domestic violence shelter. Understanding that multiple factors feed the cycle of abuse, Newhouse offers an ecosystem of support services leading to safety, self-sufficiency, and whole-person healing, including childcare, education, mentorship, and affordable housing. In 2023 alone, the organization provided support services to 598 adults and children.
As a member of the Community Impact Makers leadership team, Larry works to create a meaningful experience for Newhouse supporters through community dialogue, education, and networking. He helped coordinate our recent day of volunteer service, during which time we split our team into two groups, with one group working with the facilities team on landscaping and gardening, and the other working in the onsite daycare for children ages 1–4.
“It’s been an honor to get more involved with Newhouse in recent years,” Larry explains. “I’m proud to support Newhouse alongside GRC to help expand the impact the organization is able to have in the community, especially in the places it’s needed most. I look forward to continuing to play what small part I can in championing such a great organization and team.”
On November 9, members of the Investment Team attended the Newhouse Imagine a Day Gala, where we listened to the harrowing stories of abuse survivors and discussed this sobering reality: The current supply of domestic violence shelters can’t keep up with the demand.
The gala raised around $1.1 million for Newhouse, which will help the organization expand their services and add more beds, providing more people in our community with the safety and support they so desperately need.
