Great Range Capital Welcomes Matt Stranz as Managing Director, Business Development

It’s always a remarkable experience to watch someone decide to devote their time, talents, and expertise to GRC’s mission. And recently, we’ve had the honor of watching a new teammate do just that. We’re thrilled to be able to introduce you to Matt Stranz, our Managing Director of Business Development. Once you “meet” him below, you’ll understand our excitement.

Meet Matt Stranz

Matt was born and raised in St. Louis but transferred to the East Coast for college. After receiving a bachelor’s degree in finance and accounting and a master’s degree in accounting–both from Boston College–Matt became a licensed CPA (he’s still licensed in both Missouri and Massachusetts) and worked as a Manager at PwC in Boston in the Assurance Practice with a focus in industrial and technology sectors for the next seven years.

In 2014, Matt headed back to St. Louis and back to class, where he earned an MBA from Washington University’s Olin Business School. “I wanted to broaden my business skill sets and ultimately studied entrepreneurship,” he explains. “The curriculum was heavily weighted toward sales and marketing when launching a business, and I quickly learned that no matter what industry you go into, sales is imperative in all aspects. And when you think of PE, sales impacts every part of the process–from fundraising, to relationships, to investing/partnering, and ultimately selling companies.”

While working toward his MBA, Matt was a Principal at Cultivation Capital, a venture capital firm based in St. Louis, and managed the firm’s Life Sciences fund. After graduation, he stayed local, joining Harbour Group as the Director of Business Development, where he was responsible for sourcing and evaluating new investment opportunities, as well as developing and managing relationships with intermediaries.

Matt admits that he figured business development would be a brief stop on his way to other things. “But I’ve learned over the years that business development is where I fit,” he happily concludes. “The relationships I’ve built over the years in this industry became a part of me that I didn’t want to let go. Meeting new people, listening to their thoughts, stories, and experiences excites me, and I believe GRC shares my relationship-focused mindset.”

Matt speaks from experience, as we’ve gotten to know each other over the past three years during business development trips he’s made to Kansas City while working for Harbour Group. During this time, he was able to observe our culture and felt he could slot in naturally while also adding value on the business development front, and he’s already doing just that. Matt says he’s particularly looking forward to working with and expanding the MAP program and expanding GRC’s market presence, in general.

When he isn’t working, Matt enjoys spending time with his wife and three boys (ages 5, 3, and 6 months), and his hobbies include golfing, traveling, and reading (although having three kids under 6 admittedly doesn’t leave much time for these).
