Michael Helak

Mr. Helak joined U.S. Bank, N.A. in February 1998 as senior market leader of the central region including the Des Moines market and served until September 2022. Duties included direct and indirect responsibility for executing balance sheet, income statement, compliance and credit quality plans with key lines of business including Business Banking, Mid-market commercial lending, Commercial Real Estate, Retail, Private Banking, Wealth Management/ Trust and other banking partners to present a seamless full-service community banking experience to clients.

In 1980, Helak began his financial service career in Kansas City after graduating from the University of Arizona with a degree in Finance. He had several line and leadership roles with predecessors to Bank of America. Assignments over his career include a variety of corporate banking, national banking, and commercial group management roles including municipal and institutional sales and underwriting with a boutique investment firm.

Mr. Helak is active in the industry and community with several charitable and civic organizations:  First Command Bank, Ft Worth, Texas as Director and serves on Risk and Directors Loan Committee since January 2023.  In Des Moines; Des Moines University– Board of Trustees since 2018 and past chair of Business Advisory Council.  Iowa College Foundation-since 2005- current executive committee and past board chair. Greater Des Moines Committee– since 2005 current member and past board chair and Treasurer.

Service to other organizations over the years includes the United Way of Central Iowa as past campaign cabinet member and 2017 co-chair of the Finance and Insurance segment;  Past Executive Committee member, Director, and Finance Committee chairman for the Greater Des Moines Partnership;  past Chairman Regional Economic Development BoardFinancial Services Council board member; Past Chairman and Executive Committee member of Junior Achievement of Central Iowa;  past Director and Chairman of March of Dimes of Central Iowa; Chair of the 2017 American Heart Association Heart Ball; past chair of the JDRF Regional Heart Walk, both of which set records for attendance and fundraising.

 In addition, Mr. Helak was appointed to the Prairie Meadows Racetrack and Casino board of directors in January 2010 and served for 6 years as chair of the Finance Committee and the audit committee. He was very active within the banking industry as past board member of the Iowa Bankers Association for three years and served as board member for the U.S. Bank Political Action Committee.

Mr. Helak has three adult children, Nicole, Megan and Jonathan, and resides in West Des Moines. Extended family reside in greater Philadelphia, Dallas, and Kansas City communities.
