Welcoming James Pyle to Great Range Capital
We are thrilled to welcome James Pyle to the Great Range Capital team as our newest Senior Associate. James joins us with experience across investment banking, private equity, and private credit, bringing both a strong investment background and a deep appreciation for founder- and family-owned businesses. As a Senior Associate, James will support the firm’s investment sourcing, evaluation, execution, and portfolio management efforts.
Meet James
James grew up in Overland Park, the son of two college basketball players and the grandson of another. His father coached him through his early years, and the game ran through much of his upbringing. It eventually took him to Southern Methodist University, where he competed at the Division I level on the Men’s Basketball team.
At SMU, his coaches nicknamed him “The Standard,” a reflection of the consistency, energy, and work ethic he brought every day. As a freshman, James was outmatched by many of his teammates in size and skill. He earned and kept his roster spot through hard work and consistency, a mindset he has carried into every chapter since.
A Path Into Finance
Through SMU’s Alternative Asset Management Center, sponsored by Dallas-based private equity firm EnCap Investments, James was introduced to the world of private investing and quickly became fascinated by the intersection of strategy, operations, and capital allocation. EnCap’s founder, a former SMU basketball player himself, took an interest in James early on and encouraged him to pursue opportunities within the industry. He hasn’t looked back since.
What began as an introduction to investing quickly developed into a career focused on partnering with strong businesses and the people who lead them.
A Career Rooted in Capital and People
James began his career in Investment Banking at Barclays (Houston) and from there, he joined Tailwater Capital (Dallas) and Freedom 3 Capital (Kansas City),While each role expanded his technical investment experience, it also reinforced something he valued even more: the opportunity to work alongside entrepreneurs and management teams building businesses for the long term.
His time at each of these firms reinforced James’s belief in the importance of strong management teams and the value of partnering with founder- and family-owned businesses. Those convictions align closely with GRC’s approach.
Why GRC, Why Kansas City
With GRC, James saw an opportunity to continue doing the work he enjoys most: partnering with founders and helping businesses navigate their next stage of growth.
“The people at GRC are wildly impressive, experienced, and respected,” he says. “Truly good people, working very well together, with a common vision.”
The opportunity to work alongside GRC’s experienced investment team, and to continue partnering with the kind of family- and founder-led businesses he came to appreciate at Freedom 3, made the move an easy decision.
It also brought him home. After stops in Houston, Dallas, and a Kansas City-based role that kept him traveling frequently to New York, James and his wife Allie wanted to raise their two daughters, Palmer and Daisy, in the Midwest, on the same values James grew up with.
Outside the Office
When he’s not at the office, you’ll find James at a local park with his daughters, jogging with the dogs, or sneaking in a round of golf during naptime. He still coaches sixth-grade basketball, follows the college game closely, and dreams of someday returning to it as an assistant coach at the high school or college level.
“The dogs and I are the only boys in the house,” James jokes about life at home with Allie, Palmer, and Daisy. “It shows. I’m fully embracing the girl-dad lifestyle and trying to become an expert at braiding hair.”
In 2025, James was named to Ingram’s magazine’s 20 in Their Twenties class, a recognition of the next generation of leaders shaping the Kansas City region.
We’re glad to have James on the team and look forward to all that’s ahead.
